Wobbly Infrastructure Forcing Application Underperformance
A new study undertaken by WAN optimisation specialists, Riverbed Technologies, reveals a disconnect between technology and the infrastructure underpinning it.
According to the study of over 1,000 interviews of EMEA-based IT decision makers, 50% respondents cited complexity, followed by the need for increased skills/resources (47%) and security threats (44%), as the main reasons why investment in technology fails to deliver critical business objectives.
The pace of technological change has been immense over the past few years, resulting in a legacy of complex IT infrastructures running applications that are failing to capitalise on their potential, and high running costs for businesses.
According to Riverbed, one of the key reasons related to application failure is the performance of the network or data centre. However, 61% of respondents stated that delivering a high performance IT infrastructure is not core to their role. The problem is aggravated, as only 6% of board level executives understand that deploying the leading-edge applications require a high-performance IT infrastructure and/or network.
According to Christo Briedenhann, a regional director at Riverbed Technology, having the right infrastructure in place to ‘transform’ technology for the benefit of an organisation, is the basis for success.
